Mobile Developer (Virtual)

The primary role of this position is to assist in the development and deployment of several mobile client applications, specifically targeting iOS devices (iPad and iPhone). Applicant must own a computer running at least Mac OS 10.5 and is responsible for maintaining that computer for active development.

Applicants must have knowledge in the following areas:

  • Cocoa Framework
  • User experience design
  • UIView layout without Interface Builder
  • CoreData
  • RESTful Networking
  • XCode

Applicants must include the following, in addition to a resume no greater than 2 pages long:

  • List at least two applications you have developed for iOS, and include iTunes links
  • List at least two iOS applications you use on a regular basis, and what you like or dislike about them.

 


Web Developer (Virtual)

Newstex is looking for a qualified Developer experienced with JavaScript and HTML5 Web development. Developer will be responsible for maintaining and upgrading existing HTML5 based applications built to run on Google Chrome, Safari, Opera, and the latest version of Internet Explorer. Applicant must have experience developing cross browser applications, and must also have a strong knowledge of AJAX.

Newstex is an entirely virtual company, having no physical offices. As such applicants must be able to work independently without direct supervision. Applicant must have his/her own computers and equipment as well as a high-speed connection to the internet. Applicant must be able to test against multiple browsers and check in code using the Mercurial Distributed Version Control System (hg). Access to multiple machines running different operating systems is also a bonus.

Applicant must have strong knowledge of the following areas:

  • HTML5
  • CSS
  • JavaScript
  • jQuery
  • AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript Requests)
  • XML
  • JSON
  • Cross-Browser Web Application Development

Application Support Engineer (Virtual)

Newstex is seeking an Application Support Engineer

Candidate must be able to work in a virtual environment on his/her own without direct supervision. Candidate must be able to monitor his/her own time and record specifically what he/she has been working on and how long. Candidate will be required to monitor a support list and accept tasks as they come in. Candidate must be excellent with verbal and written communication skills in order to diagnose and fix issues.

Candidate will be required to answer support cases and do development work to fix and update existing cloud-based systems. Candidate must be able to be on call during all regular business hours and must respond to email support requests in a timely manor. Candidate should also be familiar with Ubuntu or Debian linux systems as all software is maintained off of those platforms. Candidate must have the ability to log in to servers via SSH to assist staff when issues occur.

Required Skills:

  • Must be able to work in a team remotely to build complicated systems that interact on a large scale with other applications
  • Should have some experience with Amazon Web Services
  • Must be willing to learn and develop in new cloud-based ways
  • Must know Unix/Shell Scripting
  • Must know Python
  • Must know SQL
  • Should know JavaScript and HTML5
