It finally happened! Avatar has been dethroned as the number one movie at the box office. David has slain Goliath….but in this case, David’s name is John.
Yes, over the weekend chick flick Dear John knocked out the reigning champion, Avatar to the tune of approximately $7 million dollars. Dear John pulled in just over $30 million while Avatar tumbled (I use the term loosely) to just under $23 million. What is potentially more shocking is the fact Dear John only scored %30 fresh on movie review site Rotten Tomatoes.
Never underestimate the power of a love story that doesn’t take place in space.
By the way, for the guys looking for the non-chichified version of Dear John, it’s titled G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (starring Dear John’s own Channing Tatum.
That’s more like it!
That said, let me take a moment to talk about Avatar. Sure, I was no fan of the film. However, I’ll give credit where it’s due. James Cameron is a master director who manages to raise the bar for cinema on a whole. Not simply because of the movies he makes, but the technology he creates to bring them to the screen. Every filmmaker will benefit from Cameron’s success in the long run and hopefully we, the audience, will experience even better films. That’s to say nothing of the $2 billion dollars Avatar generated, and it’s not even out on DVD yet. So, I’m willing to tip my hat to Cameron and applaud his triumph.
But, Avatar still sucked.
Bringing up third place was John Travolta’s would-be action flick From Paris with Love. The film only did $8 million and change but strangely edged out Dear John on Rotten Tomatoes with a %33 fresh. However, given the horrible reviews of the movie, it’s no wonder few people are interested in it.
